How to Pass Your CSCS Test First Time (2026 Guide)
What the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test covers, how it's scored, and a proven two-week revision plan to pass your CSCS card test first time.
What is the CSCS test?
To get a CSCS card and work on most UK construction sites, you need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test. The Operatives test has 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, and you typically need around 45–47 correct answers to pass — one of the highest pass marks of any UK workplace test.
The test is taken on a touchscreen at a Pearson VUE test centre and costs £22.50. Fail it and you pay again and wait for another slot — so it genuinely pays to be over-prepared.
What the test covers
Questions are drawn from five core knowledge areas, plus behavioural case studies that test how you'd respond to real site situations:
- Legal and management — your duties, site inductions, near-miss reporting
- Health and welfare — noise, vibration, dust, asbestos awareness, welfare facilities
- General safety — PPE, working at height, electrical safety, fire safety
- High-risk activities — excavations, confined spaces, lifting operations
- Environment — waste handling, spills, energy and material use
A two-week revision plan that works
Most people fail because they only skim the revision book. The pass mark (roughly 94%) means you can only get 3–5 questions wrong, so you need repeated practice, not passive reading.
- Days 1–3: work through one knowledge area per day, reading explanations for every answer — right or wrong.
- Days 4–8: do a full 50-question mock every day. Note every question you miss.
- Days 9–12: re-drill only your failed questions until you clear them.
- Days 13–14: two final timed mocks. If you're scoring 48+/50 consistently, you're ready.
On test day
Arrive 30 minutes early with photo ID. Read each question twice — many CITB questions hinge on words like 'first', 'best' or 'most important'. You have almost a minute per question, so never rush; flag anything you're unsure of and come back to it.
