GCSE Chemistry Revision: Topic-by-Topic Guide to Paper 1 and Paper 2

How GCSE Chemistry is structured
Chemistry splits into two papers. Paper 1 covers atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes and energy changes. Paper 2 covers rates of reaction, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, the atmosphere and using resources. Knowing which topics live on which paper stops you revising the wrong half the night before.
Paper 1 priorities
These topics carry the most marks and underpin everything else:
- Atomic structure — protons, neutrons, electrons, isotopes, and the history of the atomic model
- Bonding — ionic vs covalent vs metallic, and how bonding explains properties
- Chemical changes — reactivity series, extraction of metals, acids and electrolysis
- Energy changes — exothermic vs endothermic and reaction profiles
Paper 2 priorities
Paper 2 is more applied — expect data, graphs and real-world contexts:
- Rates — collision theory, and interpreting rate graphs
- Organic chemistry — crude oil, fractional distillation, alkanes vs alkenes, cracking
- Chemical analysis — pure substances, chromatography and Rf values, gas tests
- Chemistry of the atmosphere — how the atmosphere evolved, today's 78/21/1 composition, greenhouse gases and pollutants
Mistakes examiners see every year
- Confusing covalent bonds (shared electrons) with ionic bonds (transferred electrons)
- Saying the early atmosphere was mostly nitrogen — it was mostly carbon dioxide, like Mars and Venus today
- Mixing up the test for hydrogen (squeaky pop) with oxygen (relights a glowing splint)
- Forgetting that carbon monoxide is toxic because it binds to red blood cells, not because it's acidic
How to revise it
Chemistry rewards little-and-often question practice more than any other science, because most marks test recall and application of a finite set of facts and patterns. Do a topic's questions until you can explain why each wrong option is wrong — that's the level the 4–6 mark questions demand.
